MEET THE FOUNDER

Molly Torres Portnof

Molly didn’t start out designing tiny empires. She originally launched her career in the fashion world, working for global brands Theory and Helmut Lang.

But then she moved next door to the Empire State Building (her favorite!) and transformed the minuscule NYC apartment she and her husband shared into a distinctive space that reflected their tastes and personalities with a cool, casual vibe. The work - and the reactions of friends and family, to say nothing of her following on Instagram and the media - flipped a switch inside Molly and she never looked back.

Molly subsequently studied interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked at celebrated firms Cullman & Kravis and Studio Sofield. Notably, she also helped launch One Kings Lane’s showroom concept, “The Studio at One Kings Lane,” as its first In-House Interior Designer.

Molly soon struck out on her own, launching DATE Interiors (an acronym for ‘Designing A Tiny Empire’ and nod to her favorite building) to serve residential and commercial clients. She provides both form and function in the spaces she designs by doggedly finding, foraging, or creating just the right personality-filled elements.

At the same time - and much to her clients’ delight - she fiercely and professionally advocates on their behalf with everyone from vendors and subcontractors to building managers and co-op boards. The collaborative experience and beautiful results have garnered happy clients and raving fans for Molly, as well as features in Homes & Gardens, AD’s Clever, Rue Magazine, Domino and many more.

It all started with a 520 square foot challenge, Molly’s lifelong love of the Empire State Building, and a need for a creative outlet. Fast forward nearly a decade and she now designs sometimes tiny, sometimes spacious, but always uniquely personal empires for her clients under the DATE Interiors’ name. Whether your space is a rental in the city, a retreat home in the suburbs, or a commercial space you want to feel more “resi” than “mercial,” your tiny empire is just waiting to take shape!
